Peacock Butterflies are easily the most recognisable of all our native species here in the UK. They are surprisingly strong fliers, and can glide as well as flutter. Often among the first to greet the spring sunshine, they seek out buddleia, and their caterpillars eat nettles.

A brief encounter with a mute swan on a misty morning inspired this piece. I was enchanted by the beautiful, soft light and the quietness of a secluded waterway.

Dragonflies have such perfect descriptive names. There are Chasers, Skimmers, Hawkers and Darters. I love to watch them hunt on a warm summer evening, dipping low across moving water or weaving in and out of the reeds and low branches.
This painting was inspired by the common darters skimming over a lake like flying needles, small acrobatic flashes of red.

Eastern mythology often refers to a red string or ribbon that connects people who are fated to be together. The idea intrigues me – these threads of fate that link us all, outside our control. Ravens are associated with omens and portents. Traditionally they are birds of mystery and trickery. So if life ever takes an unexpected spin, maybe there’s a raven playing with your ribbon of fate.

Spirit guardian of the forest, a dryad maiden adorned with nature’s beauty. In ancient mythology, dryads were elusive spirits connected to trees. It was thought that the Gods would punish anyone who harmed a tree, thus hurting the dryad herself.

Skimming Dragonflies are the very essence of Summer. They enthrall us with their aerobatics as they skim across streams and rivers, hunting mosquitoes. It is so easy to forget that they have already lived another life in an underwater world, long before they reach for the skies. I have been enchanted with these ancient insects for many years, to the extent of creating a wildlife pond so that they would populate my garden.

I dreamed of a raven with blue eyes holding a blue egg in its beak. When I woke up, I just knew I had to try to capture the ethereal, slightly otherworldy magical quality of that dream. Imagine a dense forest, ancient mossy green trees, a mystical quality to the light, and the raucous call of a raven. Nothing is quite as it first appears in this place. I may visit here again.

Spring is arriving and everything is finally waking up after the long winter. I have always admired these tiny flashes of colour as they flit through the countryside. The Orange Tip is a small butterfly, with white wings, and only the male displays the prominent orange splash at the wing tip.
